THE VOYAGE OF A VIKING After working for Cooks driving round in circles all day I have decided to sail due South until i find somewhere nice! My departure date will be 1st August 2007 after I get drowned with beer as the other drivers see me off in style on 28 July, cheers! My Plan: I will cross the channel (weather permitting) hopefully in a couple of days, then I plan on heading around France, Spain, Portugal and Southern Spain. At this point it will be September and the gales may be starting. So I will make a decision to either head into the Mediterranean ( Ballearics, Sardinia, Corsica, Italy, Greece etc ) or else across to Morocco and down the west African Coast and then across to Lanzarote for a warm winter in the Canaries. I will keep you posted en route, Trev ( Mister Viking ) trevorwensley@hotmail.com P.S i ain't very good at sailing but I will be alright when I get back. Vessel and Equipment The boat is a Tankard (made on the Tamar) GRP 19'9" single keel sloop rigged yacht made in the mid 70's. It has a jib, jib boom, mainsail and spinnaker which are all in quite bad condition. It has 2 berths, sea toilet, cooker and an inboard 2 stroke 7hp Vire Engine, its moored on the Exe, it looks manky and has a musty smell inside and its called 'Tamara'. Equipment: The engine charges the battery to power all the electronic equipment, however to conserve fuel i have fitted LED lights that run on batteries to use instead of my navigation lights at night, and i also have lanterns to save power on interior lights. The navigational equipment is a lap top with CD sea charts for France and an incarta atlas CD for route planning, i also have Garmin GPS and 2 compasses. I have auto-tiller, 2 anchors, a home-made harness, 2 manky bouyancy aids, 6 fenders, plenty of rope and tools. I carry 80 litres of water and 40 litres petrol. I have a 9 foot inflatable dingy and a fixed marine radio. Wish I had: I wish i had more sea charts but they are pricey, i wish i had a proper harness and something so i could climb the mast, i wish i had lifejackets but they only prolong the agony, i would like a depth sounder and i would like a EPIRB distress beacon. A 30' yacht instead would be great. |
